HP bans use of polythene bags

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
SHIMLA, DEC 20: The Himachal Pradesh government has decided to impose a blanket ban on the use of ``recycled'' coloured polythene bags in the State from New Year, official sources have said.

The State government had passed the Non-Biodegradable Garbage (Control) Bill in 1995 and declared a ban on the use of polythene bags in the tourist towns of Shimla and Manali but it could not be implemented effectively.

The aim of banning these coloured polythene bags was to ensure that the biodegradable and non-biodegradable garbage was collected separately so that the former could be used for manufacture of manure and the latter was recycled.

The State Council for Science and Technology has already finalised rules for enforcing the new legislation and prepared plans for collection and disposal of garbage.
