NAGPUR, DEC 20: A first-year student of the government's Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) committed suicide due to ragging by the seniors on Thursday, the police said. The police have registered an offence against some unidentified seniors after a complaint made by the uncle of the deceased. No arrests have been made.Nineteen-year-old Nilesh Mohan Manorkar was found unconscious by his landlord. He was immediately admitted into a private nursing home but died on Saturday morning. According to police, Manorkar had consumed insecticide.
His uncle, an engineer with the MSEB at Chandrapur, lodged a complaint with police saying Manorkar was tortured by a group of 10 to 12 seniors at the beginning of the session. Manorkar moved out of the college hostel to a rented room and complained to his parents and some teachers.
This, according to the victim's uncle, resulted in reprisal from the seniors, driving the student to suicide.
IGMC dean Dr W M Tayade, however, denied ragging as the reason behindNilesh's suicide. He said the anti-ragging committee of the college, which met every month to consider complaints, had not received any complaint from the deceased.
