Dignity vows to clean city by 2003

MUMBAI, December 20: The Dignity Foundation today took stock of its Clean Mumbai with Dignity project at a conference at Pathuk Technical School, Vakola. The foundation, founded in 1995, provides social services to senior citizens. The BMC had approached it in January this year to elicit its support to keep Mumbai clean; accordingly, Dignity has, with the able aid of 663 `Dignitarians', helped the BMC's 34,000-strong conservancy staff to clean several areas.

Presentations and slide shows of the cleanliness drives undertaken by the foundation were exhibited at the conference, which was attended by municipal commissioner Girish Gokhale. The BMC has 221 zones in 23 wards, and three Dignitarians take care of one ward. ``The work is executed largely when our workers go out on morning walks. They supervise the garbage collection and make suggestions if necessary,'' said project director, V Subramaniam.

The foundation has also identified model streets in almost all zones of the city. ``We wish to make Mumbai azero-garbage area by 2003,'' said Subramaniam.
