Girish Bhanot shows class

CHANDIGARH, Dec 20: Girish Bhanot'S fine allround show (4 for 17 and 41 n.o.) helped Godrej and Boyce Club to beat PGI XI by five wickets in the Aadhunik Cup league cricket tournament here today.

In the other match, Gymkhana XI defeated JAL XI by 60 runs.

PGI XI scored 131 for 8 in 25 overs, with opener Rajinder contributing 43 and Amit Bhardwaj too chipping in with 28. Girish Bhanot bowled well and was ably supported by Rajesh Arora and Jagjit Saini.

Godrej and Boyce Club achieved the target, with Sanjay Sabharwal top scoring with an unbeaten 51. Bhanot was equal to the task and Vaneet Chawla's knock of 34 spurred Godrej Club to an easy win.

Brief Scores: PGI XI: 131 for 8 (Rajinder 43, Amit Bhardwaj 28, Raman Abrol 24, Rajiv Dutta 22; Girish Bhanot 4-17, Rajesh Arora 2-24, Jagjit Saini 2-26) lost to Godrej: 134 (Sanjay Sabharwal 51 n.o., Girish Bhanot 41 n.o, Vaneet Chawla 34; Amit Bhardwaj 2-27, Raman 2-26).

Gymkhana XI: 167 for 6 (Dipinder 58, Rajinder 2-22) beat JAL XI: 107 (Rajesh Kumar 55; Jagdish Kumar 5-26, Dinesh 2-16).

Satbir, Jugraj shine
Satbir and Jugraj Singh's sixth-wicket partnership of 70 runs helped CNS XI to carve out a thrilling three-wicket win over Youth Club in a league match of the tenth Champions Trophy cricket tournament here at the PGI ground today.

Coming together when their side was staring at a possible defeat, chasing the Youth Club total of 187, Satbir and Jugraj changed the complexion of the game with their judicious hitting. Satbir hit four boundaries in his unbeaten knock of 46 while Jugraj had four boundaries and a huge six in his knock of 31. Vivek Jain (34) was other batsman to contribute to the CNS bid.

Earlier, seamer Ajay Sikka's well-controlled spell (3 for 34) and Varinder's two timely wickets helped CNS XI to deny a possible late-order surge by Youth Club batsmen. Navneet Thapar top scored for Youth Club with an attacking knock of 32.

PGI XI will take on Pace Club in the next match on December 25.

Brief Scores: Youth: 187 in 35 overs (Navneet Thapar 32, Prem Pal 25, Inderjeet 25, Parminder Bawa 31; Ajay Sikka 3-34, Varinder 2-35) lost to CNS: 184 for 7 (Satbir 46 n.o., Jugraj Singh 31, Vivek Jain 34, Yadwinder Singh 3-44).

Harminder deadly
Harminder Singh's deadly spell of 6 for 10 helped Videocon XI to score a thumping eight-wicket win over Bedi XI in the M L Kaushik Memorial cricket tournament here.

Nagesh Gupta's unbeaten knock of 63 fashioned a 81-run win for Fauji XI over Diamond XI in the other match.

Brief Scores: Bedi XI: 65 (Navjit 40; Harminder 6-10, Sandeep Marshall 2-13) lost to Videocon XI: 66 for 2 (Charanpreet 26 n.o., Suman 23).

Fauji XI: 182 for 9 (Nagesh Gupta 63 n.o., Samrat 25, Krishan 3-34, Mukesh 2-33) beat Diamond XI: 101 (Rajat Bhandari 3-20).
