SHIMLA, Dec 20: At least 14 functionaries of the National Students Union of India (NSUI), including three vice-presidents and four general secretaries have revolted against the president of the body Atul Sharma and demanded his immediate removal from the post.In a joint statement, the functionaries levelled serious allegations against the president for his failure to run the affairs and strengthen the organisation in over one and a half year. The signatories, who also include some district unit leaders, also accused the president of anti- student activities.
They announced the decision to meet the Congress president Sonia Gandhi and NSUI Chief Alka Kapoor to apprise them of the activities of Sharma. He has also been accused of not taking students and other functionaries into confidence on key affairs pertaining to the interest of the students, they claimed.
The action of the functionaries is being considered as a reaction to the opposition shown by Sharma towards the nomination of Sukhwinder Sukhu as president of the State Youth Congress. Sharma is a close confident of former Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh.
Those who have signed the statement include Nardev Kanwar, Sanjay Sandhu, Jagdeep, vice-president Param Dev Sharma .
