Jewel thieves strike in Cantonment

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, December 20: In a coolly planned operation, five armed robbers decamped with jewellery worth 1.5 lakh and cash from a jewellery shop in Sadar Bazaar, Delhi Cantt. The youths came in a Maruti car with a broken number plate and were armed with new .33 mm revolvers.

Just before closing time when, Satish Agarwal, the owner of Agarwal Jewellers, was hoping to strike a good bargain from a group of foreign customers, two young men entered the shop and expressed their desire to see some gold chains. Asking them to wait, Agarwal continued with his work.

Soon, three other youths entered the shop. One of them boxed the gunmen at the door, snatched his gun and took out their own revolvers. They ordered the customers to huddle in a corner, while pointing the revolver at Agarwal.

``I was scared but calm. I asked them to take whatever they wanted and even took off my own gold chain. They were dressed in jeans and jackets and appeared to be from a rural background. They asked for the cash box. While the others collected gold chains, rings and scrap gold and put in his polythene bag, the fifth emptied the cash box.''

There were four employees present in the shop apart from the owner, his brother and his son when the incident occurred. What probably prevented the robbers from emptying out the shop completely was an onlooker outside who had sensed that something was wrong. The robbers tried to pull him inside but he managed to get away. The onlooker, an ex-serviceman, was the first to call the police.

On sensing that their game was up, they got worked up and were out of the shop in two minutes flat. Before leaving, they took away the telephone with them. But they missed the cordless telephone lying on the side.

They escaped in the car toward the road which forks to the Airport and Gurgaon. According to DCP southwest P.K. Bhardwaj who was present at the spot, the police went upto Gurgaon to trace the vehicle of that description but did not have any luck. The PCR vans and all police intersections had been alerted instantly.

``The robbers were very calm and had obviously planned it. If they had lost their cool, they would have fired those revolvers,'' said Agarwal. According to the residents of the area, lawlessness is on the increase in the area. ``We used to think that Delhi Cantt was a safe area, but now every second day, there is an incident,'' said Major Upadhyaya, who lives near the market. There have been two murders and one chain-snatching incident in the last one month.
