Thackeray to ask CM to dissolve TMC

Prafulla Marpakwar
MUMBAI, DECEMBER 24: Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray will ask Chief Minister Manohar Joshi to supercede the crisis-ridden Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) when he returns tomorrow from Nagpur. ``It is true that the corporation is controlled by my party. But if indiscipline has taken over, we are no more interested in running the crippled corporation. It will be most appropriate to supercede the corporation and appoint an administrator to streamline the working of the civic body and expedite developmental projects in the city,'' Thackeray said while speaking exclusively to The Indian Express.

Thackeray said at a juncture when indiscipline in TMC had become more of a rule than an exception, there were only two options left before him - either to ask all the Shiv Sena corporators to resign to pave the way for fresh elections or appoint an administrator. ``In view of the past experience, I do not think that any purpose will be served if corporators of my party resign. However, if an administrator is appointed,it will certainly improve the situation,'' he added. The Sena chief recalled that a decade ago, in the wake of the defeat of the official nominee of the Shiv Sena in the mayoral elections, he had asked all his party corporators to resign. ``As per my directive they resigned en masse from the corporation, but it did not serve any purpose as then the ruling Congress got a complete free hand to rule the civic body without any hindrance,'' he pointed out.

Thackeray, however, said before taking a final decision on supercession of the corporation, he would discuss the matter with Joshi. ``No doubt, I have the remote control, but it will be appropriate to discuss the matter with Joshi first,'' he remarked.

On the no-confidence resolution passed recently against Thane Municipal Commissioner T Chandrashekhar, Thackeray said it was a blunder on the part of the Sena corporators. ``It was an immature decision to move a resolution against an official of the stature of Chandrashekhar. It was moved without my knowledgeand amounted to gross indiscipline. I have already reprimanded Sena corporators, who were instrumental in getting the resolution through with the help of a section of Congress corporators,'' Thackeray said.Thackeray said since the Sena-BJP government had already rejected the resolution, there was no question of shifting T Chandrashekhar. ``We are with Chandrashekhar in all his developmental activities. We will ensure that the projects undertaken by him are completed in letter and spirit and that too in a time-bound manner.''

After high-profile T Chandrashekhar submitted a list of 40 corporators responsible for illegal and unauthorised constructions in Thane city to Chief Minister Manohar Joshi, Thane Mayor and Shiv Sena leader Premsinh Rajput had taken the lead in drafting a no-confidence resolution against the Municipal Commissioner with the help of some Congress corporators.

Accordingly, a resolution was moved and passed by a majority at the special general body meeting of the corporation on December11. Barring the 11 BJP members, all the corporators belonging to the Shiv Sena and Congress voted in favour of the resolution.
