MUMBAI, DECEMBER 24: A fire at Hindustan Petroleum Chemicals Limited, Chembur, charred labourer Harishankar Rai to death and left three other workers fighting for their lives at Masina Hospital. Rai, Shivji Chauhan, Ajay Trivedi and Prabhu Yadav were working at a fuel refinery unit at 8.45 pm when naptha from a nearby pipeline leaked out, caught fire and exploded. Rai died on the spot, while the others sustained more than 80 per cent burns. Said Assistant Police Inspector Prabhakar D Kale, the labourers did not know that the pipeline contained naptha. The unit was closed on December 8 for maintenance work, the contract for which was awarded to Onshore Construction Company Ltd, with which the four were employed.
