Work on Irla Nala stopped, protestor gets threats
EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, December 24: Quick to act on complaints of Irla residents, the BMC today halted the construction of the shopping complex over the open flowing drain at Irla. However, death threats were issued in filthy guttural language to the man who had mobilised the people of Irla to protest the construction.``It was a day of mixed feelings for me today when I heard the news of the stop-work notice issued by the top authority of the BMC to halt the construction. But I also received a death threat from an anonymous caller who was obviously unhappy with this notice,'' said the BJP ward president from Irla, Rajesh Mehta. After receiving the threat, Mehta lodged a complaint with Juhu police station. On Wednesday, Newsline had written about the frenetic pace at which the concrete structure of around 1,600 square feet was coming up right above the flowing drain because the BMC had to provide alternate accommodation to a shop owner. The same day, when the issue was raised at the Mayor's press conference, NanduSatam had assured he would review the situation immediately. Deputy Municipal Commissioner (zone 3), Chandrashekhar Rokade confirmed the stop-work order. ``The commissioner had issued the orders so that BMC can review the case again,'' Rokade informed. However, though orders were issued in the morning, work at the nala could be seen going on till late in the afternoon. ``Only after I intimated the concerned ward officer, C L Dube, about this, did he send his officials and stopped the work at Irla Nala by 3 pm,'' said Mehta. The threat was reportedly issued in the morning and the caller said: `Tumhara natak band karo, nahin to goli marenga bheje mein! (Stop your drama, or else I'll blow your brains!)' When Mehta asked the caller to identify himself, he only showered abuse and hung up. Copyright © 1998 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
