What they don't teach you at Business school: 2 MBA students held for extortion
EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, DECEMBER 24: Two former students of the Narsee Monjee College of Management, Andheri (W) were arrested this afternoon for trying to extort Rs 10 lakh from their professor. Ajitab Sharadchandra Datta, a graduate of Kanpur University and Naman Priyadarshi Mishra, a graduate of Allahabad University were nabbed today when they went to accept the amount from Professor Rajendra Kantilal Saxena (49) at the McDonald fast food joint at Lokhandwala Complex, Andheri. According to inspector Nandkumar Mistry attached to North West Region, officers of the Anti Extortion Cell were pursuing the case ever since Prof Saxena, a resident of Taxsheela Housing Complex, Mahakali Caves Road, began receiving threatening calls at his residence on December 21. The callers identified themselves as Salim and Javed and demanded Rs 10 lakh in cash. The last line in every call was the same: Pay up or die.Prof Saxena, after consulting his family and friends, lodged a complaint on Wednesday with the anti-extortion cell. From then onpolice began keeping a tab on his phone, even as they asked him to begin bargaining with the callers to lower the amount. Early this morning, Prof Saxena told the callers he was willing to pay the amount. The spot where the money would change hands was decided by the duo: near McDonalds fast-food joint at Lokhandwala.A team of officers comprising Babanrao Palande, Tushar Kadam, Ajay Parmar and Suresh Shinde soon spread a dragnet at the spot. The two turned up early in the afternoon and were nabbed as soon as they accepted the money. During interrogation, they confessed they wereex-students of Prof Saxena and had hit upon the idea after reading a report on extortion in a newspaper recently. Since they had some details on their former professor, they decided to target him first, said an officer. The two students had moved to the city from Uttar Pradesh recently and were staying at the SVP Hostel at Malad. Officers of the Anti Extortion Cell have handed over the two to the custody of Juhu Police station. Copyright © 1998 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
