Long arms need free hand: Sharma

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
SURAT, Dec 24: Let me put my house in order and I assure you that the results will be for everybody to see in a short time,'' said new Police Commissioner Kuldip Sharma, admitting that all was definitely not well with the city police.

When asked about Satbhaya murder case, Sharma said he had just resumed charge and could not comment on the case now. ``I will sit with investigating officials tomorrow and study the entire case thoroughly,'' he said.

Contrary to expectations that Sharma would start his assignment with a bang, he chose to focus on improving the level of policing as his immediate aim. And the first thing that Sharma intends ``in putting his house in order''.

``I was assured that I would be given free hand to choose my team,'' he said. And in no time two additional commissioners of police have been replaced, transfers of more top officials in the ranks of DCP and ACP may follow suit.

On police officers from PSI level getting transferred to the city with the intervention of the Home Ministry, he sternly said, ``As far as the police department is concerned, I am the government. I will not tolerate political interference of any kind, whether from the ruling party or otherwise''.

Asked about those police officers who had already got postings here through government orders, Sharma said that it was up to them to work hard and stay here or simply quit.

On the strategy that he intended to evolve, the new police commissioner, who took charge on Thursday morning, said policing had to be taken to the limits where accountability and responsible behaviour were safeguarded.

``It is a hard thing but not impossible. The police force here is definitely good'', he said, adding that night-combing, beat patrolling and proper investigation of cases would begin in earnest and at the earliest.

Sharma spent the day getting acquainted with officers from the PI level. ``Three months for improving my own force and six months for the results to be seen on the streets should be enough based on the past experience that I have in the department,'' said Sharma, who has had experience in different branches of the police department.

Asked to list the specific problems that he felt should be addressed urgently, the commissioner stated that he would spend a few days getting acquainted to the situation, understand every aspect and list down priorities. On the chaotic traffic problem, he maintained that without peoples' participation and a certain level of civic sense, the police could do precious little. He also assured that liquor flow will be curbed as far as possible.
