PSB Academy boys down Signals

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, December 24: Punjab and Sind Bank Academy beat Corps of Signals 3-0 in a pool 2 match of the Servo Sanjay Gandhi hockey tournament at National Stadium here today. In other matches, A S C defeated EME 2-1 and Food Corporation of India came back strongly in the second half to down Western Railway (Mumbai) 2-1, both pool 1 games.

Deepak Thakur scored two of the three goals for the Punjab and Sind Bank Academy team. Deepak put his team ahead in the fifth minute while Ajit Pal Singh increased the lead in the 20th minute as the winners crossed over with a 2-0 lead. Deepak Thakur scored again in the 46th minute to complete the tally.

Incidentally, both PSB Academy and Corps of Signals failed to take advantage of the three penalty corners each of them earned during the match.

The ASC-EME match was also played on a similar pattern with the former dominating the proceedings almost throughout although there was not much to write home about in the first half when no goals were scored. Ajay drew first blood for ASC in the 36th minute and D Toppu followed it up with another goal in the 50th minute. EME tried hard to reduce the margin and succeeded when A Singh found the target in the 52nd minute.

In the final match of the day, Food Corporation of India found themselves in arrears by a goal in the 22nd minute when Western Railway's Deepak Gupta scored a field goal. The Mumbai team maintained their slender lead till the 65th minute but then their defenders found the pressure from the FCI forwards too hot to handle. Prabhakar converted the fifth sixth penalty corners of his team to first draw level and then score the match-winner.
