Power flows from the mask
Just before the BJP-led coalition came to power in March 1998, K. Govindacharya, a top BJP theoretician, said that Vajpayee was a mukota, a mask. Presumably the mask covered the Hindutva face of the party.

Churning things up
There is much to be said in favour of the government's decision to go ahead with introducing legislation even though it is not assured of majority support for its Bills. When all major legislation proposed by the government is fiercely contested in a divided House, the alternative would be not to conduct any legislative business at all.

Total oblivion
By conferring the Bharat Ratna on Jayaprakash Narayan, the BJP government has made amends for a national lapse. What is surprising about the decision is that it took so long to materialise.
