Chennai, Dec 27: Reigning champions West Zone started their campaign on a confident note, registering an 80-run victory over North Zone in the CK Nayudu Trophy under-19 inter-zonal cricket tournament at the MA Chidambaram Stadium here today.What was expected to be a keen contest petered out into a tame match with the North Zone batsmen succumbing meekly to the trio of S Hazare (4-39), M Godra (3-30) and Rajesh Pawar (3-21). North Zone were dismissed for 101 runs in 24.5 overs.
Earlier, West Zone, put in to bat, scored 181 in 49.1 overs. In another match, Central Zone slumped to their second successive defeat when they lost by six wickets to East Zone.
Brief scores: Central Zone 202-5 (Asif Murtuza 39, Vineet Saxena 77, Dheeraj Sharma 46, Shibsagar Singh 3-33) lost to East Zone 203-4 in 47.4 overs (Anant Prakash 50, Arindam Das 56, Bachan Singh 41); West Zone 181 (Vivek Gandhi 33, Neeraj Patel 30, Pushkaraj Jadhav 27, RS Sodhi 3-33, Yuvraj Singh 3-32) bt North Zone 101 in 24.5 overs (RS Sodhi 32,S Hazare 4-39, M Godra 3-30, R Pawar 3-21).
