Varsity to issue fresh marks list for JJ MBBS students

Rajiv Sharma
MUMBAI, December 27: A fresh mark list of final year MBBS students from J J Hospital will soon be declared after two enquiry committees found allegations of tampering of marks to be true.

These marks in the subject of anatomy had become a subject of controversy when the students had put up posters in the hospital campus in the last week of October stating that money was being demanded from them to get good marks in the internal assessment papers. The posters had named Dr K A Rangari, professor of anatomy department, and Dr A I Rana and Dr S Rao, both lecturers in the same department.

The hospital dean, Dr A C Mohanty had appointed a three-member inquiry committee to inquire into the matter. The committee had found enough evidence to show that marks had been tampered with and that they had been increased so that some students had a better chance of passing the exams. However, though this report was sent to the university, the results of final year MBBS were declared without acting upon the JJ panel'sreport.

Earlier this month, the University of Mumbai had set up its own enquiry committee to investigate into the marks tempering case. It found most of the allegations to be true and it also compared the students' marks scored in the theory exams with the marks scored in the internal assessment of anatomy subject. A wide disparity was found in these marks in many cases, which was an additional proof that some students had been unfairly given extra marks, sources said. No standard rules or regulations were followed in giving marks and the internal assessment was found to be totally subjective.

Dr Snehalata Deshmukh, Vice Chancellor, University of Mumbai, said that the board of examinations met soon after the varsity panel report was received and decided on the fresh internal assessment.

``The marks will now be given on the basis of this assessment, and there will be no re-examination for the students,'' she further said.
