VADODARA, Dec 27: A special syndicate meeting has been called on Monday to decide the action to be taken on the student union elections, which were cancelled on Thursday, in the wake of student violence. Before the syndicate meeting, members of the Election Observers' Committee will meet to express their opinions on Thursday's incidents.Talking to Express Newsline on Sunday, MSU Vice-Chancellor Anil Kane said, ``I do not have any objections if the syndicate members decide student union elections will be conducted again. Elections, in fact, are necessary, since the term of the previous union has already ended.
``But if this is the way elections are to be held in the future then the poll procedure has to be changed. Otherwise, the administrative authorities have to think of some other alternative''.
Commenting on the goof-up of the ballot paper -- Thursday's fracas had been triggered by the fact that the serial number 5 was missing from the paper -- Kane said it was a genuine mistake and action would be taken against the person who had been responsible for the oversight.
``A three-member committee has already been instituted by the university authorities to investigate the ballot-paper slip'', he added.
The vice-chancellor said that elections would be held now if the syndicate members were taken into confidence and the students promised them that there would be no repeat of last Thursday's scenes.
Elaborating on his personal views of the election scene, Kane said that it seemed to be time to change the election procedure at the university. ``It is high time that the procedure was streamlines and the right kind of students came forward to contest the polls'', he said.
The V-C said that some way should also be contemplated to keep party politics outside the campus and restrict the elections to the students level. ``I've also decided to float the idea of giving preference to the toppers of every faculty. If the first five students refuse to contest, then the rest can come into the picture'', he said.
Kane said that for the purpose the syndicate would also have to agree with the decision, which would mean modifying the university laws.
``As it is, the student union is was not looking into the problems faced by the students. In fact, all the confusion was created due to the union members themselves,'' he added.
