Deepak moves into semis

CHANDIGARH, Dec 27: Deepak Goel breezed into the billiards and snooker semi-finals of the Haryana State Championship being played simultaneously at the Cannon Ball Basement, Sector 37 and YMCA Hall, Sector 11 here today.

In the snooker competition he outclassed Lalit 59-45, 61-17, 77-33 with a fine and accurate potting and good cue-ball control. Lalit was bereft of ideas.

In billiards Deepak demolished Shashi Kiran 473-216 in a very high scoring match. Shashi had no answer to the clinical accuracy with which Deepak hit short breaks of 40 points and above in a consistant manner.

Saurav Khater entered the finals of the junior snooker event by running through his matches with thumping victories over Anandit Joshi 66-17, 67-11, 64-17 and then Kapil Chadha 66-40, 51-27, 77-33).

In the finals he will face Amit Swamy on Tuesday. Sunny Bhalla entered the semi-final after a plucky Saurav also made a short work of Devrat Shourie 60-1, 58-6, 69-11 in the open snooker event.

Chandigarh champs
Chandigarh beat Punjab 29-28, 29-24 in the final of the IInd North Zone Ball Badminton Championship at the Shivalik Public School, Sector 41 here today. Anisha, Soniba and Monika gave excellent performance by Chandigarh while Rajwinder and Usha served Punjab better.

Delhi won the men's title by beating Punjab 29-8, 29-19. Santosh of Delhi and Anisha of Chandigarh were declared the best players of the tournament.

Santosh (Delhi), Rajnesh (Punjab), Amit Sinha (UP), Wasim Raja (J-K) and Mukesh (Chandigarh) were declared the best upcoming players in the men's section. Rajwinder Kaur (Punjab), Soniba (Chandigarh), Shefali Tyagi (Delhi), Sumaya (J-K) and Usha (Punjab) were adjudged the best upcoming players in the women's category.
