JAMMU, DEC 28: "Damn it, they (security forces) are everywhere. Please order us to return as it is too cold to operate here.''This and more of such frantic messages by the militants operating in various parts of Jammu region to the officials of the Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) across the Line of Control (LoC) have been intercepted by the security forces and the State police of late.
Till a few months ago, these very militants used to air provocative slogans on the frequency of the wireless sets of the security and police forces. However, they have suddenly gone cold not only because of the climate but also because of induction of a new Army division in Rajouri and Poonch districts.
Added to this is the growing resentment among the locals against the ultras, as also the inter and intra gang rivalries between foreign and local militants.
Say sources in the security forces, many militants are willing to surrender along with their weapons. Several of them have also contacted theauthorities on wireless sets for the purpose.
The troops have so far killed over 200 militants in Rajouri and Poonch districts, besides over 100 in the hilly Doda district during the current year. Of them, over 70 have been killed by the recently inducted Army division in the border districts during the last two months.
Significantly, the slain militants included dreaded foreign mercenaries and various top leaders of the Hizbul Mujahideen, Lashkar-e-Toiba and other outfits, during the last two months. "They (militants) are virtually on the run in view of the concentration of troops in both the border districts,'' a senior Army official said.
He added that the militants, who were earlier having it easy due to the lack of adequate security forces, are now shocked over the sudden presence of troops in almost all the areas. ``Such is the position at present that wherever they (militants ) raise their heads, they find us,'' a senior Army official said.
Besides, the militants are trapped at the higherreaches of Pir Panjal in extreme cold conditions in view of the concentration of security forces and the police at the middle heights, he added. As for those ultras hiding in the middle heights along with huge stocks of ration and other essential commodities, they too have had to seek shelter elsewhere in view of the ongoing ``seek and destroy'' operations by the troops.
Huge stocks of ration, medicines, arms and ammunition have been seized by troops from various abandoned hideouts of the militants in all the three districts during the recent past.
Another set back to the militants is the increasing number of locals who approach the troops with information about the ultras. Besides, the incidents of abduction and rape of local girls on gunpoint by the foreign mercenaries had not only caused resentment among the hapless people but also between local and foreign militants. As a result, the local militants, on a number of occasions, inform the security forces the whereabouts of the foreignmercenaries.
