Former Minister denies pressure on CBI to proceed against Jaya

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE

CHENNAI, DEC 28: TMC leader and former Union Minister S R Balasubramanian today clarified that there was no pressure on the CBI to file a case against former Chief Minister J Jayalalitha, as alleged in reports appearing in a section of the press.

``There was no secrecy; the actions directed by the Union Government were totally transparent,'' he said, addressing media persons at Satyamurthy Bhavan.

The Tamil Nadu Government filed a case against Jayalalitha for receiving $ 300,000. But the State Government did not have the infrastructure to proceed in the case as foreign nations were involved and foreign exchange regulations were violated. Therefore, the State requested the Centre to take up the case, he said, adding that the Centre sought legal opinion before issuing the notification directing the CBI to proceed against Jayalalitha.
