DURBAN, Dec 28: South Africa snatched the initiative back as the West Indies crumbled to 246 for eight wickets before bad light halted play early on the third day of the third Test today at Kingsmead.A controversial catch dismissed Carl Hooper for two. The West Indian vice-captain got an inside edge to Shaun Pollock, and wicket-keeper Mark Boucher, diving to his left, picked up the ball low down and clutched it to his body.
Hooper asked Boucher for confirmation of the fairness of the catch, and, when he received it, walked. Later, television replays suggested the ball may have hit the ground just as Boucher gloved it.The visitors now lead by just 132 runs with only two second innings wickets still standing.
Herschelle Gibbs was the man who put the skids under the tourists, taking two brilliant catches to revive the South Africans, who had been put to the sword by a 160-run partnership between Brian Lara (79) and Shivnarine Chanderpaul (75).
Gibbs dived full-length to his left at square leg to holdonto a low chance from Lara, who was playing his first pull shot of a disciplined innings. David Terbrugge was the bowler, and it gave him Lara's wicket for the second time in the match. As seems to happen so often when one batsmen in a major partnership is dismissed, Chanderpaul went soon afterwards, spooning a simple caught-and-bowled chance back to Pollock.
