Cold wave claims 21

NEW DELHI: Cold wave in parts of northern India intensified on Monday with ten deaths reported overnight thus taking the death toll to 25. Official reports said there were two deaths in Lucknow and two in Etah while the districts of Bareilly, Pratapgarh, Sultanpur, Agra, Rampur and Allahabad recorded one death each in the past 24 hours. Foggy weather disrupted flight and train schedules besides disrupting road traffic. Meanwhile, Chandigarh experienced the coldest day on Monday with the day temperature dipping to 1.8 degrees celsius.

Subsidy on DAP

NEW DELHI: Government on Monday announced a 35 per cent subsidy increase in imported di-ammonium phosphate (DAP) fertiliser for the rabi and kharif seasons 1998-99 as the concession level reached to Rs 3,400 per tonne from Rs 2,500 per tonne in August 1998. The ad hoc concession on indigenous DAP was also enhanced to Rs 4,400 per tonne from Rs 4,000 per tonne in August 1998 and Rs 3,500 per tonne prevailingduring the rabi season 1997-98.

Pak curfew

ISLAMABAD: Pakistani authorities imposed a curfew in a north western city on Monday morning after at least four people were killed and 19 injured in rioting on Sunday, a government statement said. Officials say rioting started in Bannu after a policeman allegedly shot dead a school boy when he refused to be sodomised. Troops were called in to keep the peace after police failed to control protesters who went on a rampage.
