MTPF, Ambernath trounce BEST

MUMBAI, DEC 29: Machine Tool Prototype Factory (Ambernath) trounced BEST 6-2 in Pool A of the BHA-conducted Third Division hockey league, sponsored by Punjab National Bank, at the Naigaum Police ground, today.

In an exciting fast-paced match, BEST surprised their opponents by taking the lead through a field goal by C Mall in the very second minute.

MTPF were not perturbed by the setback. They kept their cool and restored parity in the seventh minute through Samar Jadhav. Thereafter, MTPF lifted their game to dizzy heights and made the most of the no off-side rule.

MTPF made it 2-1 in the tenth minute through Shivshankar Gawli. Further on Samar Jadhav struck again to give them a 3-1 lead at the breather.

In the second session, BEST again scored first to reduce the margin through a penalty-corner conversion by C Mall who scored his second goal.

MTPF then denied them any further success as they pumped in three more goals in the 47th through Samar Jadhav (second goal), in the 53rd minute through SanjayNiwathe and in the 56th minute through Rajan Guujar.

There will be no game at this venue on Wednesday.

Waghela nets brace

A brace by Chiman Waghela was the highlight of BMC's 3-0 victory over Young Star (Bandra) in the New India Assurance WIFA Second Division football league at the Cooperage, today.

Navin Wadekar was responsible for the other BMC goal.

JNPT and Tarun Sporting were concerned in a 1-1 draw. Raju Bag gave Tarun the lead and V S More equalised for JNPT.

In yet another match of the same competition, Ryan International prevailed 1-0 over Royalers (Juhu). The all-important goal was scored by Terence D'Cruz.

Maharashtra fares well

Taekwondoists from Maharashtra won five out of the eight gold medals at stake in the men's section on the final day of the National-level championship at the RCF Sports Complex, today.

Master Kim of the World Taekwondo mission gave a scintillating display of speed and power, while slicing away the tops of beer bottles and coconuts with hisbare hands.

26-31 kgs: Neeraj Varma (Mah). 31-36: Rashid Shaikh (Del). 36-42: Paramesh Lambadi (Mah)). 42-48: Raja Kanojia (Guj). 48-54: Kishore Singh (UP). 54-60: Raju Jadhav (Mah). 60-66: Nilesh Jalnawala (Mah). Over 66: Sachin Birla (Mah).
