MSU students go on the rampage again over poll

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
VADODARA, Dec 29: Within 24 hours of the M S University Syndicate's decision to go in for a repoll, trouble broke out on Tuesday when students went on the rampage at the union office, maintaining that elections could not be held till the authorities sorted out the ballot-paper goof-up that forced elections to be cancelled on December 24.

Meanwhile, the university came a step closer to just that by appointing former Science faculty dean V M Shah to look into the misprinting of the ballot paper. Shah has been told to submit his report at the earliest to the patron of the union and pro-vice-chancellor Deepak Kumar De.

The appointment, coming five days after the authorities announced the formation of a high-level committee, has been construed as a sign of the university's panic at the student leaders' threat of aggression.

Talking to Express Newsline, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad leader Sanjay Jaiswal, who spearheaded the ransacking on Tuesday, said elections were not required at present and that it was ``wrong'' of the Syndicate to have reversed the university decision against holding of polls. ``The authorities have to take a decision on the December 24 goof-up'', he said, adding that he would continue the stir till that happened.

Another section of students, meanwhile, said there shouldn't be any repolling at all, only counting of the votes polled for the election of faculty representatives and general secretaries -- these went off smoothly -- last Thursday.

In another development, students of the Padra M K Amin Arts and Commerce College, who had contested for the faculty representatives' posts, and Faculty of Commerce students began an indefinite hunger strike on Tuesday.

Their representative told Express Newsline that a repoll for posts elections for which had been completed would add to the financial burden of contestants and the university. ``Instead the votes polled should be counted'', he said.

All faculty deans are scheduled to meet on Wednesday to review the situation and ensure fair polling at the faculty level.
