Haryana enter super league

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, December 29: For the first time in five days, play started on time but Services did not have sufficient time left at their disposal to dismiss Haryana for the second time in their North Zone Ranji Trophy league match which ended in a draw at Harbaksh Stadium here today.

Set a victory target of 181 to get in 28 overs (13 plus 15 mandatory), Haryana finished with 61 for two when the match was called off due to poor visibility after 9.2 mandatory overs.

The three points gained from the last league encounter helped Haryana aggregate 22 points, one ahead of the Services, and join Delhi (34) and Punjab (32) as the three teams from the zone to qualify for the super league.

The interest on the final day centered around whether Haryana would be able to avoid the follow-on, as they still needed 26 runs with three wickets remaining. The visitors, helped by some shoddy catching by the home team, managed to reach 236, to trail by 90 runs on first innings. Sanjay Dalal (31: 1x6, 2x4, 143m) was dropped by Narender at gully when Haryana were still behind the target. Parinder Sharma (32: 1x4, 139m) also had a slice of luck. yet, the injured opener carried on and was ninth out after getting his team past the follow-on target.

Services, in an attempt to go for quick runs to force an outright win, declared their second essay at 90 for six, shortly before tea. But a 30-minute stoppage in between, due to a strange gas-smell around the ground, prevented any close finish to the match, although the Services medium pacers struck two early blows in Haryana's second innings.
