Advocates to meet Sharma over DySP incident

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
SURAT, Jan 3: Advocates of the Surat District Bar Association (SDBA) have decided to meet City Police Commissioner Kuldip Sharma and demand an explanation as to why DySP P Y M Chudsama had not been arrested as yet.

The Umra police have registered a case of attempt to murder against the Ahmedabad-based police official, who drove his private vehicle on to agitating lawyers outside the court premises on Friday after an argument. Chudasama had come to the court on an official trip to depose before a judge in a case.

President of the SDBA Ashit Mehta said on Sunday that the advocates would wait until 3 pm on Monday for the officer to be arrested. ``If he is not arrested by then, we will proceed to the commissioner's office in a rally and demand to know why Chudasama was not being arrested three days after the incident.'' Mehta told Express Newsline.Meanwhile, the chakka-jam, picketing and boycotting of regular work at the court premises by the lawyers will continue, he said. Regular functioning of the district court has been hampered since December 19, after the advocates passed a resolution in a general meeting stating that all regular work would be boycotted in protest against the inability of the police to arrest the killers of Nita Satbhaya, an advocate herself.

It was when the lawyers were picketing outside the court premises that they entered into an argument with Chudasama.

Chudasama, according to Mehta, had come over to depose in a court case dating back a few years ago when he was PI in the Sachin Police Station of the city. "We would not have objected if he said he was a police officer. Instead, he abused the advocates and even drove the vehicle on them," Mehta added.

Meanwhile, the Khedut Samaj, while extending full support to the agitating lawyers, have threatened that it would have to take to the streets if attempts were made to scuttle the agitation. President of the Khedut Samaj of the district Karshanbhai Patel, in a statement issued here saw the court incident as a deliberate attempt to scuttle the agitation by lawyers.

In a scathing attack on the police department, the leader demanded to know why Chudasama should not be suspended from his post for driving his vehicle on agitating lawyers and why he was not arrested as yet.
