JCT take on Bagan in NFL opener

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, January 3: Two of the country's top teams -- National Football League defending champions Mohun Bagan and former champions Jagjit Cotton Textiles (JCT) Mills (Phagwara) open the year's football season with a clash in the third National Football League, to be known as the Coca-Cola League-1999, on January 5 at Ambedkar Stadium.

In a new format introduced this year, 12 teams have been divided in two groups of six teams each and will play on home and away basis. The top two teams from each group will qualify for the second round. The winners and the runners-up of the second round will set up a title clash.

Teams in Group A are Mohun Bagan, Air India, JCT, Dempo, Tollyganj and Churchill Brothers while Group B has East Bengal, Salgaocar, FC Kochin, Mahindras, Indian Bank and ITI (Bangalore).

Both JCT and Bagan are in the Capital and had a practice session today. With the transfer of a number of players, both the clubs have a new setup this season. The new-look JCT team comprises several newcomers from Tata Football Academy and some young collegiates from Punjab.

On the other hand, Mohun Bagan, which is certainly going to be the favourites in the tournament, have roped in top players like Indian captain I.M. Vijayan, Joe Paul Ancheri, Nazimul Haque, Khemtang Paite, apart from having their old faithful Nigerian star Chima Okerie.

The Delhi Soccer Association (DSA) has made elaborate arrangements with the help of MCD authorities to give the stadium a new look and also to improve the ground conditions for the smooth conduct of the match.

The sale of tickets priced at Rs 30, Rs 20, and Rs 10 will start on Tuesday morning at 11.00 am. The kick-off time is 2.00 pm.

The match refree will be Krishan Avtar. Doordarshan will telecast the match live.
