NASHIK, Jan 6: Thirty-three displaced farmers, including nine women, staged a rasta roko and some of them tried to immolate themselves outside the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) LPG bottling project situated at Panewadi village near Manmad on Wednesday. The farmers were demanding jobs at the plant.Police arrived in time to thwart the immolations and took them into custody. The protestors, led by Damu Patil, Raheman Shah and Shankar Gambhire, Rajendra Sor and Mansub Kungar, had earlier announced that they would immolate themselves on January 5 as the IOC had failed to keep its promise of providing jobs to the displaced families.
Later, at a meeting of government and IOC officials, the protestors and former Communist Party of India MLA Madhavrao Gaikwad, officials of the Indian Oil Corporation reportedly stated that 26 displaced persons had already been employed with the company. The remaining 19 would be recruited in the next two months, they assured the gathering.
The stir was withdrawn after thetalks. The IOC has acquired 75 acres of land in the Panewadi and Dhotane villages to set up a bottling plant at the site. The displaced farmers were promised preferential employment at the plant by the officials of the Corporation.
