SYDNEY, JAN 6: Shane Warne is to lead Australia's limited overs team in the absence of injured captain Steve Waugh, his appointment today coming less than a month after admitting involvement in a bookmaking scandal.
Steve Waugh's twin Mark was chosen vice-captain in the 14-man squad picked for the first five matches of the series against England and Sri Lanka.Warne, who captained Australia in a limited overs match against New Zealand last year when Steve Waugh was injured, was the obvious choice to take over. However, it was Warne's admission of involvement in the scandal that caused speculation about his suitability to lead his country.
The ACB said it would resist calls for the pair to be punished further because the fined them more than four years ago and considered the case closed.
The triangular series opens with Australia playing England in Brisbane on Sunday.
The team: Steve Waugh (captain), Shane Warne, Michael Bevan, Greg Blewett, Adam Dale, Damien Fleming, Adam Gilchrist, Brendon Julian,Darren Lehmann, Glenn McGrath, Damien Martyn, Ricky Ponting, Mark Waugh, Brad Young.
