EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
Woman pickpockets arrested
The Wadi police on Tuesday arrested a gang of 20 women from Ghariali Pole on the M G Road when they attempted to pickpocket a market-goer. According to inspector I D Upadhyaya, the women hail from Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh and are professional bag-lifters and pick-pocketeers. Their modus operandi is to first surround somebody on the pretext of begging and then one of them would clandestinely pick the person's pocket. The purse/bag is then transferred one by one till the last person melts into the crowd and runs away, Upadhyaya said, adding hence it was difficult to trace the culprit. He said that gang members were, however, caught luckily in their very first attempt after their arrival from Ujjain. Interrogations are on.

A vehicle thief Haroon (22), a resident of Sayaji Park on the Ajwa Road, on the outskirts of the city, was caught by the Wadi police red-handed while trying to run away with a scooter. According to the police, as the fasting month of Ramzan was on, a large number of people come to the Jama Masjid for night prayers and park their vehicles on the street. The youth tried to steal the scooter as soon as the owner entered the mosque after parking his vehicle. However, some persons standing nearby suspecting him to be a thief, handed him over to the police.

The orders were passed by Commissioner of Police J Mahapatra.
