NEW DELHI, January 6: Fourth seed Anuja Thakur of Maharashtra waged a grim battle to down a determined T.V.Sridevi of Karnataka 2-1 to move into the pre-quarterfinals of the seventh National women's snooker championship at the IIT badminton hall here today.It was the second successive tense day for Anuja as she fought back to overpower Sridevi in best of three frames with a 69-44, 27-72, 55-41 verdict in group D.
Anuja was given a scare by Neelam Mittal yesterday before the fourth seed managed to emerge winner in tie-breaker.
Late last night, Anuja's elder sister Meenal Bairagi created a major upset when she defeated second seed Judith Walia of Karnataka in straight frames, winning 42-39, 43-39.
However, on Wednesday morning Judith managed to pip veteran Kamla C.Babu of Tamil Nadu 79-13, 49-58, 64-21.
Defending champion and top seed Heena Khandelwal (Maharashtra) trounced Karnataka's Bhanu K.Mendon 41-22,56-19 in group A. In other matches, in group E, Pooja Galundia of Rajasthan trounced Sonal Mamoonwala (Mah) 68-19, 69-11. Varsha Mazumdar (Mah) thrashed Uma Devi (Kar) 55-31, 65-11.
