NEW DELHI, Jan 7: The Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar), led by Simranjit Singh Mann, today demanded a country-wide ban on the novel Vanity Incarnate written by journalist Harinder Singh alleging the fictional work ``hurt the religious sentiments of the Sikhs.''Ajit Inder Singh Mofar, the party's leader in Punjab Assembly, who submitted a memorandum to president K R Narayanan this morning, also demanded a high-level probe by a sitting Supreme Court judge into the ``deep rooted'' conspiracy behind the book which he alleged was ``politically motivated.''
``It (the writing of the book) is a big conspiracy to destabilise Punjab, especially at a time when we are celebrating the tricentenary of the birth of Khalsa. It is vital for Punjab, Sikhs and the entire nation that the conspiracy is unearthed without delay,'' he told newsmen.
Charging the ruling Akali Dal-BJP government in Punjab with ``shielding the culprits'', Mofar demanded that ``the writer, publisher and their accomplices'' be booked under theNational Security Act.
While the book has already been banned in Punjab, Mofar demanded a countrywide ban on the work alleging it tarnished the image of Sikh gurus, was abusive of all Indians and had created unrest in the minds of Punjabis.
The author and his publisher wife, who were booked for outraging religious feelings, have since been released on bail.
