``I don't think the US has been given the authority to ask us about our security concerns and requirements. It is sheer arrogance to make such observations. The US does not impress by making such observations,'' the Defence Minister said, while talking to newsmen here last night.

``How we address our security concern is our problem. If the US thinks that it can express concern over other countries' security requirements, then other nations should also have the right to express their concern over the United States,'' Fernandes, who arrived here after an aerial survey of the proposed Sethusamuthiram Project linking Palk Bay with Gulf of Mannar, said.

Asked about suggestions to cut down the defence expenditure, Fernandes said this would be possible once the relationship between India and Pakistan improved.``The Indian government had taken initiatives to better the ties between both the nations during the NAM meet, SAARC meet, and at the United Nations. Besides, secretary-level talks had begun. Trade between India and Pakistan had improved. Bus service between the two countries would begin in a few days,'' he said.

``There is good improvement in the relationship during this regime, which should be appreciated. Once the relationship between India and Pakistan improves, it will be possible to cut down the defence expenses,'' the minister said. Referring to the Chinese ``interference'' in the problems between India and Pakistan, he said: ``we have assumed certain geo-political relationship. Some of the problems can be addressed only after mutual trust improves''.
