Vadodara last won the Talim Shield in 1987-88 when the present coach Vineet Wadkar, captain Tushar Arothe and manager Rakesh Parikh were all mambers of the team. That year, though, Vadodara drew their game against Mumbai, making winning the Shield this year that much sweeter as they defeated Mumbaiin a back-to-back match outright after half-a-century, in 1949.

In the morning Gujarat began at their overnight score of eight for no loss and negotiated the first 10 overs without mishap before Moinuddin Kadri trapped Amrish Kotecha leg before for 24 and sent back the other opener Nilesh Modi, caught by Arothe in the slips.
