NEW DELHI, January 7: The Union Home Ministry late last evening sought and obtained from Delhi Police the details of Romesh Sharma's interrogation report in which he is claimed to have met BJP leader Sushma Swaraj. She has repeatedly denied having ever met Sharma.Sharma reportedly told Crime Branch interrogators that not only did he know Sushma well but had met her a few days before his arrest. Home Secretary B.P. Singh, sources said, called up senior police officials and demanded evidence of Sharma's statements. Subsequently, a sealed envelope containing audio and video tapes of Sharma's interrogation reached Singh at his North Block office.
North Block officials insist there is nothing unusual in a Union Home Secretary summoning records from the city police. It has happened before, they say. The record sent to B.P. Singh last evening does not contain the entire interrogation of Sharma. The tapes carry only those excerpts in which he talks about Sushma Swaraj.
The Home Secretary is not the only person who has been supplied with the taped recordings of Sharma's interrogation. The police have also handed these over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) as the latter is probing Sharma's links with politicians, bureaucrats and policemen. With the city police having slapped two chargesheets on Romesh Sharma, they are obviously a step ahead of the CBI which is yet to wrap an inquiry in any of the several case files concerning Sharma. On the other hand, the probe on the missing passport file that contained details of Sharma's role in obtaining a passport for Dawood Ibrahim's mother has resulted in the accused securing a bail. Several days after being rapped by the court, the CBI is yet to make any headway in this case. The file has still not been traced.
