Two Christian-run schools - Deep Darshan in Ahwa and Navjot High School in Subir - which were damaged on Christmas have been paid compensation. Deep Darshan School principal Sister Carmen Borges said she had received a compensation of Rs 50,000, while Rs 26,000 was paid to Navjot High School.

Sister Borges expressed satisfaction over the compensation even though in her memorandum to the authorities, she had put the damages at Rs 60,000. However, Navjot School authorities said the compensation appeared meagre in view of the damages to a portion of the school building as well as burning of a jeep and a motorcycle.

Besides, 22 churches damaged in the recent attacks will be given compensation. The authorities have prepared a list, based on the FIR lodged with police in the wake of attacks on churches in the Dangs after a Hindu Jagaran rally.

Yesterday, Resident Deputy Collector B P Sudani had told District Superintendent of CNI T V Gaikwad at a meeting that he wanted to disburse compensation before the Prime Minister's visit. Sudani asked Gaikwad to call all representatives of the churches to collect compensation, a spokesman for CNI told Express Newsline.

District collector B N Joshi could not be contacted.``The Collector is at the helipad looking after the arrangement for Sonia Gandhi's visit '', an official said.

The authorities, according to the CNI spokesman, were yet to finalise the compensation which would be based on the damage estimates.

Meanwhile, a delegation, led by Gaikwad, left for Gandhinagar to meet the National Commission for Minorities. Four persons from Zharsod village who were allegedly beaten up a group, accompanied Gaikwad, the CNI spokesman said.
