WASHINGTON, JAN 13: Sanctions on Iraq will remain in place until United Nations monitors verify that Baghdad has eliminated all its weapons of mass destruction, US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright has said.``There has been no one that has suggested an end to the sanctions without it having been very clear that (Iraqi leader) Saddam Hussein has carried out his obligations,'' Albright said yesterday.
Albright hinted there could be changes in the makeup of the controversial UN Special Commission (UNSCOM) for Iraq following news it was guilty of spying on Baghdad, but insisted Iraq had to be monitored.
``We welcome suggestions for improvement (of UNSCOM) but a verification and monitoring system has to be in place in order to be able to carry out the job that it has been assigned,'' she said.
``We have full confidence in chairman Butler,'' she said. Richard Butler's report detailing Iraq's refusal to cooperate with his team led to four days of US-British punitive air strikes against Iraq.
