MADURAI, JAN 14: A five-member team of paediatric surgeons headed by the dean of the Madurai Government Rajaji Hospital, Dr Manickavasagam, has removed a foetus from the stomach of a nine-month-old baby, the hospital sources said today. They said the intestine, head, penis, tongue, hair and mouth of the foetus were well-developed, but its heart and hand were deformed.
The doctors who removed the foetus in a caesarian operation, said, ``It is very rare to see a foetus in the stomach of a baby. One in a million would have such a freak foetus''.
The sources added, ``It may be because two embryos were developing in the womb of the baby's mother, and one developed faster than the other. The embryo which developed slowly might have got into the foetus of the embryo which grew faster. It should have actually been a twin. Unfortunately, one embryo was not properly placed''. Such an operation was being performed in the hospital after 30 years, they said.
