January 14: Former National `A' champion Abhijit Kunte spoiled his chances of earning the Grandmaster title when he went down fighting to IM Piankov, but RB Ramesh maintained his good run on a satisfactory day for the Indians after two poor rounds.Overnight leader GM Alexi Dreev of Russia maintained his lead despite a draw against compatriot Vladimir Burmaking. IM Svetushkin (4.5) was forced to a draw by another Russian, A Skoklov (4.5).
Ramesh, who started the tournament with a flourish, winning his first two games, held the Georgian GM in a game which started with Berlin defence but reached a theoretical stalemate -- rook and opposite colour Bishops with equal pawns.
With no breakthrough possible, the two players agreed for the truce. India's top junior player, K Sasikiran crushed Russek Gail in Guco Piano opening with black pieces. Sasikiran, who faced setbacks in the last two rounds, played splendidly against an irregular line opted by Russek and won a piece. As there was no counterplay possible Russek resigned immediately.
Top Indian woman player, IWM S Vijayalakshmi came up with a creditable show to hold 14th seed GM Arrencibia. Vijayalakshmi opted for English opening against her strong opponnent and played correctly to snatch half a point.
IM D V Prasad and Gokhale beat highly rated opponents GM Becerra Rivero and IM J Gonzaales respectively while IM-elect Saravanan drew with IM Delchev.
Saravanan played Accelerated Dragan variation against Delchev and reached a dry endgame after the players exchanged all the pieces. With no chances of forcing a win, Sarvanan's draw offer was accepted by Delchev.
IWM Mrunalini Kunte drew her sixth game to take her tally to 2.5 points while fellow IWM Pallavi Shah (2) lost to a little known player as the Indian women came out with mixed results.
