"Sikh sangat" appeal to withdraw edict
EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
JALANDHAR, JAN 14: A select gathering of "sant samaj" (Sikh holy men) here today dubbed the recent edict issued by the Akal Takht Jathedar on Badal-Tohra dispute as a "political hukamnama'' and called upon the Akal Takht Jathedar to withdraw it.They also called upon Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) to convene a "Sarbat Khalsa'' (religious congregation) to deliberate on the issues arising after the issuance of the edict. The host of today's gathering was Baba Kashmira Singh. A total of 37 Sikh holy men from different "deras'' participated in the deliberations. The show smacked of government patronage as many officials of the public relations department were present at the venue. Fissures appeared to have surfaced after the 37 holy men signed a resolution calling for withdrawal of the edict, as five among sought to dissociate themselves from the appeal to the Akal Takht Jathedar.
