Lecture series on city's problemsThe Keshavji Naik Ganeshotsav Sanstha, organisers of Mumbai's oldest Ganeshotsav, will hold their annual Lokmanya Vyakhyanmala from January 18 to 22 on `Mumbai and its Problems.' The speakers include former CP Julio Ribeiro, joint police commissioner Dr P S Pasricha and former commissioner Sharad Kale. While Ribeiro will speak on `Rising crime in the city' (Jan 19), Dr Pasricha will discuss `Mumbai's transport problems' (Jan 18) and Kale will take up the issue of a `Clean Mumbai' (Jan 21).Giants Group's Kalyan president The Public Relations Officer of the Kalyan district BJP, Hemal Rawani, has been appointed as president of the Giants Group of Kalyan. Rawani and his team will take over at a function on January 20, where state ministers Jagannath Patil and Prakash Mehta, along with former Member of Parliament Ram Kapse will be present.Teachers' unions join hands Junior college teachers affiliated to the Bombay University CollegeTeachers' Union (BUCTU) have decided to enrol themselves as members of the Mumbai Junior College Teachers' Union (MJCTU) with immediate effect, said a press release. The decision was taken to strengthen the ongoing indefinite strike of junior college teachers.Public function for swami The Sri Balaji Mandir, Dombivli, will accord Sri Rangaramanuja Maha Desikan a public reception on Sunday, January 17, at 3.30 pm at the SIES High School Hall, K A Subramanian Road, Matunga (Central Railway). The function will kick off at 3.15 with a poornakumbham to the Acharya, followed by vedic prayers and a sangeetanjali at 3.25 pm. The welcome address will be delivered by V Ranganathan, Additional Chief Secretary of the Government of Maharashtra. The chief guest for the function is Justice V Ranganathan of the Bombay High Court.MUPTA dharna at Azad Maidan The Maharashtra Underprivileged Teachers' Association (MUPTA) held a dharna at Azad Maidan on Friday and burnt a copy of the SukhtankarCommittee recommendations for junior college teachers. The MUPTA demanded that the government fill up the backlog in this academic year, stop grants to institutions if they fail to fill the backlog, implement reservation for part time posts and not appoint surplus teachers in reserved category posts.Welfare board for karmacharis The state government will shortly set up an independent Safai Karmachari Welfare Board on the lines of the Mathadi Kamgar Board and a Safai Karmachari Finance Development Corporation to ensure that around 35 lakh safai karmacharis across the state are paid their due wages and working conditions improved.The formation of the Safai Karmachari Welfare Board will ensure that the sweepers employed in the various cooperative societies will be recruited through the board. The employer, in this case, will have to deposit a certain amount with the welfare board towards the wages of the worker. BMC hospitals slash drug price The Brihanmumbai MunicipalCorporation has cut down the price of some of the medicines supplied to the civic hospitals by nearly 10 per cent. Chairperson of the BMC health committee Sardar Tara Singh said after his talks with dealers of 23 companies he has managed to bring down the expense on medicines by around Rs 50 lakh. State darshan exhibition The Maharashtra Darshan Project competition was organised on Jan 13 by the joint efforts of the education department of the BMC and the panel of the head of teachers of R-north ward.
