SAS NAGAR, Jan 15: Punjab Transport Minister Raghbir Singh today announced that the government would soon purchase 220 new buses by February this year in place of old and obsolete buses. Earlier in October last, the government had purchased 612 buses to make the journey in the state safe and pollution free.Talking the media persons after inaugural function of Oil Conservation Fortnight here today, he, accompannied by senior Punjab Raodways officials, said all depots had been directed to ensure that all should pass through SAS Nagar Bus Stand. Earlier, majority of buses were plying without making halt at the bus stand. The closure of causeway was the given reason.
Earlier addressing the gathering, the minister pointed out that the petroleum consumption in the country would touch 113 million metric ton.Earlier in 1996, it was 89 million. The 65 per cent of consumption. He further added that drivers and depots would be rewarded for oil coservation. Last year, 64 drivers and four depots were felicitated, he said and appealed to people to conserve petrol to save the foreign exchange.
