Small Wonder

Richa Singhal
Twinkle Toes
With an ambition of becoming a top classical dancer, there's no doubt about where her passion lies! Apoorva Makan, aged seven, loves to dance - be it Bharatnatyam, Western, folk or even filmi dances. She has around 25 public performances to her credit, in both dance and classical Hindustani music.

Apart from clearing her Akhil Bhartiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Mandal (Mumbai) examination in Hindustani vocals with a first division, Apoorva can also play the harmonium, tabla and tanpura. Her favourite singer is Lata Mangeshkar, with her favourite song being Ae mere vatan ke logon.

But her first love definitely is Bharatnatyam with Hema Malini being her role model. She undergoes training with Radha Krishnamurthy at the Annapurna Nrityodaya, Kirkee.

This talented child with a pleasing personality, got her motivation from her father, who was himself a good dancer and singer during his college days. Apart from prizes in dance competitions, Apoorva has won awards for singing, drawing, handwriting, flower arrangement, rangoli at various events organised by Camlin, Young Express Club and Pimpri Chinchwad Doctors Association. Even though both her parents are doctors, Apoorva has no ambition of becoming one, but instead wants to pursue her passion in classical dance.

Apoorva also loves sports. She makes it a point to play tennis for an hour daily and regularly swims too.

And if all this makes you wonder how she fares in her examinations, then fret not. A student of standard II of St Joseph's High School, Apoorva is always among the toppers and manages to win prizes in her school's extra-curricular activities too. In case her dance programmes and examinations coincide, she manages to cope up with her studies on her own. Even while giving a performance, she is very natural and cool.

There's wishing Apoorva luck in fulfilling her ambition.
