Give security to Anjana, NHRC tells police

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
NEW DELHI, Jan 19: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed Orissa's Director General of Police to provide adequate police protection to Anjana Mishra, victim of an alleged gangrape last week, and asked him to file a report on the incident within a month.

Acting on a complaint by Dr Ajaya Kumar Mishra, chairman of a voluntary agency `Sankalp', the NHRC directed the State police chief to submit the requisite information and report by February 11. The NHRC, in its order, said the commission might proceed to take any action it deemed proper in case of default.

Terming the alleged gangrape as ``barbaric'', Dr Mishra, in his complaint to NHRC chairman M N Venkatachaliah, has sought immediate ``high-level round-the-clock security'' to Mishra saying she was ``symbolising assertion of human and women's rights against an entrenched exploitative system''.
