JCT, Tollygunge play out draw

Kuldip Bhatia
LUDHIANA, Jan 19: Jagatjit Cotton Textile Mills, Phagwara would rue the wasted opportunities as they were held goalless by Tollygunge Agragami, Calcutta in the third National Football League game here today. With the teams splitting points, Agragami's tally went up to eight points in Group A, where they head the table. JCT are at five points.

Playing their first match on home turf, JCT failed to seize the initiative as their forwards fumbled at crucial moments. They did dominate proceedings in the first half, with consistent attacks on the Tollygunge citadel, but failed to penetrate the solid defence of their opponents. Hardip Gill missed twice in the fifth and 22nd minutes and again in the second half (52nd minute). In the 42nd minute Hardip Sangha and Ram Pal combined well to make a good move but the shot failed to beat the Tollygunge custodian.

Tollygunge, in the absence of star striker Roshan Perera, played a defensive game in the first half and were content playing for a draw in the second.

Skipper Chandan Das and Nwakanma Chibuzor did manage to take the ball very close to the JCT goal post but the attempt proved unproductive (34th minute). Similarly another go at the goal by Bastab Roy in 44th minute landed in the hands of JCT custodian Virender Singh.
