Arpan, Nona lift Junior College crowns

MUMBAI, Jan 18: Arpan Lakhani beat Shyam Gala 6-2, 6-2 in an all-Mithibai final to lift the Inter-Junior college boy's singles tennis title at Practennis today.

Nona Wagh made it a Mithibai double with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Sonya Gomes (St Xavier's) in the girls final.

Mithibai completed a treble beat Bhavan's 2-0 in the boys team championship final.

Wali in semis

Saket Wali (NM), Amitpal Kohli (Mithibai), CaRL Bokdawalla (Fr Rodrigues) and Awish Jayashwal (Sydenham) made the inter-collegiate squash semi-finals at the CCI court today. The semi-finals will be played tomorrow.

Results: Individual championship: quarter-finals: Suket Wali (NM) bt Rakshak Malhotra (MMK) 15-12, 15-13, 15-2; Amitpal Kohli (Mithibai) bt Darab Khan (St Xavier's) 15-6, 15-11, 13-15, 15-6; Carl Bokdawalla (Fr Rodrigues) bt Kapil Todarwal (Somaiya Arts) 15-13, 15-9, 7-15, 13-15, 15-11; Awish Jayashwal (Sydenham) bt Siddharth Thakkar (Govt Law) 11-15, 15-12, 15-11, 15-13.

Mayekar shines for IA

Brilliantwicket keeping by Indian Airlines' Anand Mayekar helped Indian Airlines beat Zandu by seven wickets in the quarter-finals of the Indian Airline Invitational Cricket Tournament at the IA Sports Club Ground, Kalina today. Mayekar, who was later declared the Man-of-the-Match effected three catches while bundling out Zandu for 140 and then later smashed 40 in IA's reply.

Brief Scores: Zandu 140 in 27.4 overs (J Temse 55; Chetan Tipnis 2-24, Shripad Dodwad 2-24) lost to IA 143-3 in 21 overs (Anand Mayekar 40, Shiva Renke 45)

Draws mar duels

Draws dominated the proceedings today in the Second Veterans Football Tournament at the Goans Sports Association ground, Cross Maidan.

Goans Sports and Mahindras dished out a goalless draw. A similar result was dished out in the third match of the day played between Central Railway and Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilisers Ltd.

Even the match in which goals were scored ended in a draw. Tatas drew with Century Rayon 1-1. John Alfonso's curling flag-kick inthe fifth minute gave Tatas an early lead. However, P Jayanand fetched the equaliser for Century Rayon, 23 minutes after resumption.

In the event, Tatas ended up topping Group A followed by Century Rayon while Central Railway headed the Group B standings. All three teams qualified for the semi-final stage.

ASCl collegians prevail

ASC (Panvel) beat JSM (Alibag) in the concluding match of the Inter-Collegiate (Thane and Raigad Zones) cricket tournament at the Matunga Gymkhana. Both colleges qualified for the Inter-Zonal championship to be held on Jan 21 & 22.

Brief scores: JSM 198 (Mahesh 28, Mahesh Kadam 65, Ganesh 47-7 lost to ASC (Panvel) 200-5 (Pritish Kenie 51, Krishna Bhoir 44, Nilesh Thorat 49 n.o.; Shilesh Pendurkar 47-2)

Schoolgirls tourney

Mumbai Schools Sports Association (MSSA) have incepted an under-16 cricket tournament for girls. Matches will be held at the MSSA-Castrol Schools Sports Centre Ground, Azad Maidan (North End) and will commence on Jan 21 afterinauguration at 8.00 a.m.

Matches will be played on a matting wicket. The five-team tournament will be run on a league basis with each innings comprising 20 overs.
