Refinery bags environment award

VADODARA, Jan 19: Gujarat Refinery has been awarded the `Golden Peacock Environment Management Award' by Institute of Directors at the 9th World Congress on Total Quality held in Mumbai recently. P S Rao, Executive Director, Gujarat Refinery received the award from Minister of Environment and Forest Suresh Prabhu. The award, instituted by the World Environment Foundation, is given as a special recognition to those organisations, which are role models in environment management.

Gujarat Refinery, which is an ISO 9002 and ISO 140001 certified organisation, is installing Diesel Hydro-desulphurisation unit at a cost of Rs 526 crores, which will produce low sulphur dioxide in order to attain reduction in sulphur dioxide emissions to atmosphere due to vehicular pollution. Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether Unit for production of lead-free petrol is also being set up at a cost of Rs 37 crores. A central effluent treatment plant is also being constructed with state-of-the art technology. This plant will take care of hydraulic load to meet the requirement of future projects.

Treated effluent will conform to 50 per cent values of specifications of MINAS. Besides, treated effluent will be totally reused thereby resulting in savings of fresh water consumption. This ETP will consist of TPI (Tilted Plate Interceptor), DAF (Dissolved Air Floatation), bio-power, aeration basin and pressure filters consisting of sand and carbon beds. Commissioning of CEPT is planned in March this year.
