SURAT, Jan 19: The city police announced on Tuesday that Chandrakant Kahar and Naresh Patel, who were arrested last week for the murder of BJP councillor Nita Satbhaya, did not kill or injure her, but added that the arrest of a third person could be the breakthrough they were looking for.A team of Detection of Crime Branch personnel had left for a place outside the State in search of the missing link, Police Commissioner Kuldip Sharma said, while refusing to go into specifics on the grounds that it could hamper investigations.
The police reiterated, however, that both Kahar and Patel -- picked up from Ugat and Bhesan respectively -- had actively colluded with whoever had actually committed the crime.
Incidentally, on Saturday, the police had foiled an attempt by the Koli Samaj to take out a rally in support of Patel, who, they claimed, had been wrongly implicated.
Meanwhile, in a significant development, the needle of suspicion seemed to have veered around to Farooq Munshi, by far the most wanted criminal in the city. A senior police official on Tuesday hinted that Munshi could very well be one of those involved hands-on in the murder of the councillor.
The police refused to divulge any further information on the progress of investigation of the case, though both Kahar and Patel were interrogated for the sixth day on Tuesday. They are currently in remand for 10 days.
Sharma stated in the evening that the investigation was basically moving in the direction of those cases over which Satbhaya had raised objections as councillor, but refused to mention any specific case or complaint that was central to the probe.
``More arrests will be definitely made and all the accused will be arrested,'' the commissioner assured. He however added briefly that there could be a larger conspiracy at work behind in the Satbhaya murder.
After weeks of speculation that Satbhaya's objections to Tapi sand-leasing was behind the murder -- Kahar is an old hand in the sand-leasing business -- knowledgeable circles admitted that it did not appear to be the cause now. Satbhaya had often complained of irregularities in deals and contracts of sand-leading during her first, and only, tenure in the Surat Municipal Corporation.
