Flying start by GMP

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, JAN 22: Greater Mumbai Police (GMP) began their campaign with a 4-1 drubbing of Bombay Republicans B in the BHA-conducted First Division hockey league, sponsored by Punjab National Bank, at the Khalsa College ground, Matunga, today.

GMP took the lead in the 14th minute through a penalty-corner conversion by Wajid Shaikh. They dictated terms thereafter but could not increase the lead in the first-half, on account of missed chances.

Republicans came up with the equaliser in the 33rd minute when Rajindra Singh scored following a defensive lapse.

On resumption, GMP were all over the rival territory but had to wait till the 54th minute to increase the lead. Ace striker Sandeep Jadhav converted a penalty `stroke' which was awarded by National umpire Blaise Monteiro for stick-checking inside the circle by a Republican defender.

Madhav Jadhav then made it 3-1 for GMP with a neat reverse-stick shot in the 62nd minute. Veteran Devidas Sakpal rounded off the tally for the cops.

There will be no game atthis venue on Saturday.
