Kerala boys move up

Ravi Menon
PERINTHALMANNA, Jan 22: Andhra Pradesh girls rallied from first-set deficit to outplay Karnataka 24-26, 25-19, 25-15, 25-16 for their second victory in the preliminary league phase of the National Junior Volleyball Championship here today.

The Andhra boys later had a cake walk over Chandigarh, who suffered their second defeat today. Andhra won 25-11, 25-10, 25-10 in just 40 minutes.

The win too Andhra into the quarter-finals along with Kerala, Karnataka, Services and Pondicherry. Kerala beat Uttar Pradesh 22-25, 25-21, 25-19, 25-14 in a match that lasted 66 minutes.

The Karnataka ploy of relying more on placements and drops to fetch points against Andhra paid off in the first set. With Shyla Thomas timing her lifts well, both Mani A Bachu and Uma Maheswari found enough time and room to baulk the rival double blocks with brilliant drops.
