Migrants' body holds function

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
CHANDIGARH, JAN 22: The kites did not crisscross the afternoon sky. Ecstatic shouts of victory did not fill the air. No enthusiasm, no celebrations. The festival of the Basant Panchami received a lukewarm response in the City today.

But true to the adage, "Aai basant, paala udant", the sun did shine its way through dense clouds which had been hovering over the City for the last few days. However, the festivities to mark Basant Panchami were carried out in the Leisure Valley as a part of the Lahore Day celebrations by The Federation of Migrant Group from Pakistan. The usual hangama was amiss at the valley also which otherwise is associated with various celebrations in a big way.

The Federation had organised various competitions like on the spot painting, turban tying, fancy dress competition for the school children to create an awareness among them about the Indian traditions. The celebration was inaugurated by H.S. Dilgir and later the prizes were given to the winners of the various events by K.C.Verma, senior vice-president of the federation. The winners in various categories were, Gurpartap Singh in Turban Tying; Harpal Kaur in folk dance; Rajni and Baljit in Duet Song; Saurabh in Kite Flying in the junior category and Sri Krishan in the senior category.
